In March 2022, the formation of the 1st Separate Special Purpose Brigade (1st SSPB) began on the basis of the Zhytomyr Regional Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center. Initially, the brigade was subordinated to the Commander of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Later, the 1st SSPB, along with its subordinate military units, was transferred under the command of the Operational Command "North" of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. In 2023, the 1st SSPB was incorporated into the 9th Army Corps of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. On October 1, 2023, the brigade officially received its Battle Flag. Full-scale Russian Invasion (2022–2024) Since its formation in March 2022, servicemen of the 1st SSPB have carried out combat missions to defend the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine in the Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Kharkiv regions. Units of the brigade participated in the liberation of the settlements Mala Shesternia, Novohryhorivka, Topolyne, Kniazivka, Ivanivka, Potiomkyne, Vysokopillia (Kherson region); Shchurivka, Nova Husarivka, Bairak, Balakliia, and Kupiansk (Kharkiv region). Brigade personnel performed combat tasks in the areas of Troitske, Popasna, Novodruzhesk, Vovchoyarivka, Zaitseve, Vesela Dolyna, Bilohorivka, and took part in the defense of the Vuhlehirsk Thermal Power Plant and in controlling the Vuhlehirsk Reservoir. In March 2022, brigade units were deployed to defend the Chernihiv region, where they took control of Shestovytsia, Mazhuhivka, Andriivka, Dniprovske, and Chervone. They took part in the liberation of the Kherson region and carried out missions near Huliaipole. In April 2022, in cooperation with the 60th Separate Mechanized Inhulets Brigade, brigade units fought in Popasna, Lyman, and other settlements in Luhansk and Donetsk regions. Together with the 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi, they defended the Donetsk front near Klynove, Pokrovske, Semyhiria, Zaitseve, and supported the defensive actions and withdrawal of personnel from the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after King Danylo near Popasna (Luhansk region). From May to June 2022, brigade units performed combat tasks near Semyhiria (Donetsk region) and defended the Vuhlehirsk TPP. In July 2022, in coordination with the 80th Separate Air Assault Galician Brigade and the 115th Separate Mechanized Brigade, they defended Novodruzhesk and Pryvillia (Luhansk region). They also carried out missions near Serebrianka, Hryhorivka (Donetsk region) and Bilohorivka (Luhansk region). In September 2022, the brigade actively participated in the Kharkiv counteroffensive, successfully storming enemy positions "Moskva" and "Piter" and liberating Shchurivka, Nova Husarivka, Bairak, and Vilkhuvatka. From September to October 2022, brigade units supported the 57th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade named after Cossack Ataman Kost Hordiienko near Ivanivske, Pokrovske, and Vesela Dolyna (Donetsk region). In cooperation with the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Hetman Ivan Mazepa, the 1st SSPB took part in the assault and liberation of Bilohorivka. Since December 2022, units of the 1st SSPB have carried out missions near Krasna Hora (Donetsk region) and Chervonopopivka (Luhansk region) and have participated in the defense of Bakhmut and Soledar.
