In January 1991, the majority of the personnel of the helicopter regiment took an oath of allegiance to the people of Ukraine, and in 1993, the regiment was transferred to the 14th Air Army. In 1994, it was included in the Army Aviation of the Carpathian Military District (ПрикВО).
At the end of 1995, based on the 340th Separate Transport and Combat Helicopter Regiment, the 389th Separate Signal and Radio Technical Support Company, and the 745th Separate Airfield Technical Support Battalion, the 7th Army Aviation Brigade (Transport and Combat) was formed.
From 1995 to 2022, the helicopter personnel actively participated in UN peacekeeping missions in various parts of the world: in the former Yugoslavia (Zagreb), Croatia, Eastern Slovenia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Turkey, Liberia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The 335th Separate Combat Helicopter Regiment and its command were disbanded, and its personnel and equipment were reassigned to reinforce the 7th Army Aviation Brigade.
By Presidential Decree of Ukraine, the unit was named the “7th Breslavska Army Aviation Brigade”, and at the end of 2000, the brigade was reorganized into the 7th Separate Breslavsky Army Aviation Regiment.
According to a joint directive of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine dated March 25, 2016, the separate regiment of army aviation was reorganized into the 12th Separate Army Aviation Brigade.
On August 24, 2017, for Ukraine’s Independence Day, the President of Ukraine presented the 12th Separate Army Aviation Brigade with the Battle Flag of Ukraine.
According to Presidential Decree No. 545/2020, the 12th Separate Army Aviation Brigade was awarded the honorary name of General-Khorunzhyi Viktor Pavlenko — aviator and commander of the Air Fleet of the Ukrainian People's Republic’s Army.
Since April 2014, the personnel have been actively participating in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) in Eastern Ukraine, and from 2017 to 2021 in the Joint Forces Operation (JFO). There, they have been carrying out tasks such as medical evacuation, recovery of the fallen, search and rescue, and transport missions under enemy fire from illegal armed groups.
To ensure the effective execution of defense and counteroffensive operations, on the first day of the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation (February 24, 2022), the ground support echelons of the 12th Separate Army Aviation Brigade began deployment and repositioning.
The military unit is directly involved in combat, performing missions such as: fire strikes, attacks on enemy forces, elimination of airborne and airmobile enemy units, raiding, forward operations, airborne insertions and support, counter-helicopter operations, destruction of tanks, armored vehicles, command posts, communication hubs, enemy personnel, and infrastructure components.
The servicemen of the 12th Separate Army Aviation Brigade named after General-Khorunzhyi Viktor Pavlenko continuously perform their assigned duties and have been awarded state honors for their service.
