The formation of the engineering troops of the Ground Forces of Ukraine, created in 1994 on the basis of the 1591st engineer regiment.
The 12th Support Regiment was established on December 1, 1994, based on the 1591st Engineer Battalion, which, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, came under the jurisdiction of Ukraine. Initially, the unit was called the 12th Engineer Regiment, later renamed the 12th Operational Support Regiment, and since 2021, it has been known as the 12th Separate Support Regiment.
The regiment specializes in engineering support for combat operations, specifically in the following areas: Construction and repair of bridges, roads, and fortifications. Demining of territories. Engineering reconnaissance. Preparation of engineering obstacles.
The regiment includes units specializing in engineer-sapper tasks, pontoon-bridge operations, road and administrative support, and other related areas. The regiment's motto is "Always ahead!".
