The 169th Training Center named after Prince Yaroslav the Wise, commonly referred to as "Desna", is one of the leading training centers of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The center plays a key role in training servicemen for various units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
History The Desna Training Center has a long history that dates back to the Soviet era. After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, the center became part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On December 5, 2020, by decree of the President of Ukraine (No. 549/2020), the center was honored with the name "named after Prince Yaroslav the Wise", in recognition of the restoration of historical traditions in the national army and its high achievements in combat training.
Insignia and Symbolism The insignia of the training center reflects its historical heritage and contemporary mission. The main elements of the emblem include an image of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, symbolizing wisdom and strategic thinking, as well as elements related to military training and the protection of the state.
Participation in Combat Operations While the primary function of the center is training soldiers, many graduates of Desna have participated in key combat operations in eastern Ukraine, including the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) and the Joint Forces Operation (JFO). During Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, graduates of the center played an important role in defending the territorial integrity of the country.
Principles and Mission The mission of the center is to ensure high-quality training of soldiers for the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The core principles include: Professionalism: Continuous improvement of the skills and knowledge of the personnel.
Patriotism: Fostering love for the Motherland and readiness to defend it. Innovation: Implementing modern methods and technologies into the training process.
Cooperation: Sharing experience with international partners and participating in joint training exercises.
Awards and Honors In recognition of its significant contribution to ensuring Ukraine’s national security and defense, five servicemen from the 169th Training Center were awarded the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Medal, 3rd class, and five others received acknowledgments from the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.
