The military unit began its formation in February 2015 in the city of Pervomaisk, Mykolaiv region, based on the 46th Division of Rocket Forces of Special Purpose. The unit was officially established on May 25, 2015, which is now celebrated as the day of the military unit.
Since May 2015, the unit has successfully carried out its assigned tasks in the Anti-Terrorist Operation zone in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
The 40th Separate Artillery Brigade named after Grand Duke Vytautas has been actively involved in the war against russia since 2022, playing a key role in the defense and counteroffensive operations of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on multiple fronts.
The brigade notably participated in repelling the russian offensive in the Kharkiv region, especially on the Balakliya axis, where its artillery units successfully destroyed enemy equipment and trapped russian forces in a ring. Videos showcasing the results of these attacks display the destruction of russian 2S3 "Akatsiya" self-propelled howitzers and other successful strikes.
The brigade also actively employs Ukrainian-made aviation complexes for artillery fire correction, allowing for precise destruction of enemy equipment. The daily efforts of the brigade’s personnel have significantly contributed to the successes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces across various front lines.
