The 56th separate motorized infantry brigade as part of the "East" OC began formation on February 23, 2015 in Dnipropetrovsk, in accordance with the joint directive of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine dated December 8, 2014. In April-May 2015, the 21st, 23rd and 37th separate motorized infantry battalions were added to the brigade, which at that time performed combat missions in sector "M" (areas around Mariupol). According to the order of the First Deputy Chief of the General Staff dated May 12, 2015, the management of the 56th Motorized Brigade, combat and rear support units was placed at the disposal of the head of sector "M" on May 14, 2015 for involvement and direct participation in the anti-terrorist operation on the territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. On July 10, 2015, the formation in its entirety was withdrawn from the "M" sector to the 239th combined military training ground (Cherkaske village of the Dnipropetrovsk region) for additional staffing and combat settlement. On August 29, 2015, the brigade was returned to the "M" sector for involvement and direct participation in the anti-terrorist operation in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. In September 2015, it was reported that the brigade had completed combat coordination. In November 2016, the brigade received a permanent deployment point in the city of Mariupol. On August 22, 2018, the brigade was awarded the honorary name "Mariupolska
