The 57th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade was established as part of the broader mobilization efforts during the russian aggression against Ukraine in 2014. The initial formation of the brigade was made up of personnel from the 17th, 34th, and 42nd Territorial Defense Battalions, primarily composed of residents from Kirovohrad Oblast. These battalions played a crucial role in the defense of eastern Ukraine, particularly during the summer battles of 2014.
Key Combat Participation The brigade has been an active participant in the defense of critical positions in eastern Ukraine, including the defense of Avdiivka, Sieverodonetsk, and numerous other settlements. In 2023, the brigade began modernizing its equipment, transitioning to Rosomak Polish-made armored personnel carriers (APCs), which are equipped with a 30mm Mark 44 automatic cannon for enhanced combat effectiveness.
Honoring Historical Legacy On May 5, 2018, during a ceremonial event in Nova Kakhovka, the brigade announced its intention to petition for the honor of being named after Kostya Gordienko, the Cossack hetman of the Zaporizhian Sich in the 18th century. Kostya Gordienko was a prominent military figure who resisted the russian occupation of Ukraine in 1709 and supported Ivan Mazepa during his rebellion against the Moscow Tsar. This historical connection is symbolic of the brigade's resilience and dedication to the defense of Ukraine.
On May 6, 2019, during the first Day of the Infantry, the brigade officially received the honorary title of "Hetman Kostya Gordienko", recognizing its courage and steadfastness in the defense of Ukraine.
Awards and Recognition On September 24, 2022, the brigade was awarded the "For Courage and Valor" honorary distinction by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, recognizing the exceptional bravery and contributions of the brigade in defending Ukraine's territorial integrity.
The brigade continues to embody the spirit of Kostya Gordienko, standing as a pillar of defense on Ukraine's eastern front and honoring its historical ties to the Cossack legacy of resistance.
