is a territorial body of border protection within the Eastern Regional Department of the State Border Service of Ukraine. The Sumy border detachment guards the section of the state border located within 3 controlled districts of the Sumy region (Sumsky, Konotopsky, and Okhtyrsky)
The 5th Border Detachment of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine was established on October 20, 1992.
Throughout its existence, the 5th Border Detachment has undergone a challenging path of formation, reform, and development.
In Sumy region, a comprehensive system for protecting the state border of Ukraine was built — new border units were established, and border crossing points and control points were opened and operated.
In February 2014, Russia, after annexing Ukrainian Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, launched an armed aggression against Ukraine. On February 24, 2022, it treacherously and cynically began a full-scale invasion of our country.
Since 2014, the border guards of the 5th Border Detachment have participated in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) and Joint Forces Operation (JFO), and since 2022 — during the full-scale war — they, alongside fellow defenders from other components of the Defense Forces, have been resisting the Russian occupiers on the state border in the Sumy region.
